Western life is alive and well in the Canadian Badlands. Cowboys still ride the range, and you can join them in the saddle at working guest ranches or watch them ride bucking broncs at small-town rodeos. Farming, too, is vibrant here, with Canada’s largest network of irrigation canals turning much of these dry lands into fertile fields of grain and bright yellow canola.
The badlands west is also open to innovation, witness the growing number of bison and llama operations and of specialty crops such as lentils and sunflowers. But something that never changes is the western hospitality, with a warm welcome extended at u-pick gardens, weekly farmers’ markets and country fairs.
